Behind The Lens

Location

This picture is an hdr composite image taken from Lycabettus Hill in Athens, Greece.

Time

It was taken at the so called "blue hour", right after sunset, just as the city lights have been turned on.

Lighting

In order to have plentiful detail in the highlights as well as in the shadowy areas of a scene like this you have to use an hdr technique, which I did. The light was dim but beautiful and the colours were very vibrant.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5200 in combination with my Nikkor 18-140 f3.5/5.6 on a tripod. I also used a shutter release in order to have my camera perfectly still during the shots.

Inspiration

The view from the top of Lycabettus hill is panoramic and awesome all day and night, but especially during sunset and the blue hour, and I wanted to take a picture of the cityscape of Athens when the light and the colours are most beautiful.

Editing

I developed the raw files correcting the white balance and adding contrast and a little sharpening, and combined them to have an hdr result.

In my camera bag

I always have my camera (now Nikon D750) and lenses (now Nikkor 50mm f1.8 & 24-120mm f4) in a suitable backpack when I go to create pictures, in which I add 2 batteries, a cable shutter release and - according to the occasion - a Godox flash with extra batteries.

Feedback

If you want to take a beautiful sunset, blue-hour or night landscape pictue, you should always carry a tripod and a shutter release with you to avoid any camera movement during the shots, as well as think carefully about the potential compositions and the direction of light.
