Behind The Lens

Location

On a horse ranch in Whitefish Montana while on a photo workshop.

Time

It was late afternoon and the cowboys ran the horses down a hill in front of us and behind us they had hay for them. This photo was taken near the hay.

Lighting

For the workshop, we were set up for side lighting as the horses ran towards us. This photo was taken behind where we were positioned. I turned around and saw this beautiful backlit steam rising from their warm bodies on the very cold afternoon.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5D with a 70-200mm lens. I use a Gitzo tripod with a Really Right Stuff ball head.

Inspiration

The backlit steam was so impressive I had to shoot it! It gives such a different mood than the front and sidelight ones I took that same afternoon.

Editing

I shoot in raw format, so I always have to process my photos. I primarily use Adobe Lightroom and switch to Photoshop for spot removal (much easier than Lightroom. I typically set white balance, adjust highlights and shadows, and my white and black points. I sharpen and apply lens correction and I am done.

In my camera bag

I love landscapes and animals so I have a Canon 5D Mark III for landscapes and a 7D for animals. I typically take a 16-35mm, 28-135mm and either a70-200mm or 100-400mm. Polarizer, split neutral density and straight ND filters to slow down water. Cable release, extra cards and batteries. The one thing that always stays in my bag is a headlamp. I have bought more than I can count after realizing I was going to have to hike back after dark or before sunrise. Now one has a permanent home in my bag.

Feedback

I know there are several organizations that offer photo workshops that concentrate on horse photography. Unless you know someone on a ranch that will let you shoot, the workshops are probably the way to go. The prices and length vary. I have done them in winter, spring and summer but winter is always my favorite. This photo was only possible because it was so cold out.
