Behind The Lens

Location
Along the Cottonwood Big Canyon road in the Wasatch-Cache National Forest near Salt Lake City, UT are a couple of well-known activity areas including Silver Lake in Brighton, UT. This autumn image was taken on the south westerly slope surrounding the lake.
Time
Morning is one of the best times of day to catch the sun rising through these aspens, lighting up the leaves as the early morning wind whistles through the shivering yellow leaves. This was taken at 8:52 am on October 1, 2018 which was at the peak of the flashy fall season this year.
Lighting
The temperature was chilly early in the morning as the sun rose through storm threatening skies. The filtered light on these yellow leaves is something photographers chase after. This is only a part of the complete stand of aspens but the subtle contrast between the tree trunks and the leaves makes for a peaceful image.
Equipment
I took this picture with the Panasonic Lumix DC-G9 M 4/3 camera (handheld) mounted with the Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 50-200 f2.8-4.0 ASPH lens. I did not use any filters or flash. (f/13;1/50s; ISO200; fl50mm)
Inspiration
At this time of year, colors are everywhere in the area. My goal for the morning shoot was to find a stand of aspens in total yellow color with interesting tree trunks that was isolated from the surrounding location. While there were several in the general vicinity that met my basic idea, the morning light was particularly interesting on this grouping. As this was my first time in the area, I had to scope it out quickly before the sun rose too high. As the weather kept changing from light sprinkles to sunlight, timing was important so choosing a spot and waiting for just the right moment gave me lots of time to reflect on framing alternatives.
Editing
Aside from cropping and some color adjustment, this image is as it was taken. I use ACDSee Photo Studio Ultimate 2019 for photo processing.
In my camera bag
As this was quite a bit of trekking around in unknown territory, I carried one body (G9) and three lenses (Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmar 100-400mm F/4-6.3 ASPH for any distant wild animals and birds; Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 50-200mm f/2.8-4 ASPH; Panasonic Leica DG Vario-Elmarit 8-18mm f/2.8-4 ASPH). I did have a tripod/monopod with me that I used earlier in the morning but found difficult to use when trekking up the hills for this particular shot. I use a Vest Guy photo vest so that everything I need is easily accessible from the front without having to take a backpack on and off.
Feedback
Fall colors are fun to capture and each region has its own variety of foliage. It is important to study a region and the type of foliage you want to observe. Local websites give up to date information on the state of the color changes. Normally, I would spend more time scouting out an area before taking pictures but this opportunity arose and so I took it!
