The Hallmundarhraun lava field that flows down from the Langjökull glacier is made up of largely porous rock that gives rise to a number of underground streams and rivulets. These percolate through the rock, eventually arriving at the base of the lava field where they flow into the Hvítá river in a series of stunning small waterfalls known as Hraunfossar. The scene looks particularly striking during the autumn when the surrounding vegetation turns every imaginable shade of red, orange, yellow and gold.
