I took this photo in Cheyenne, Wyoming at Frontier Days on July 29, 2018.Time
I took this photo at 3:40 pm during the barrel racing competition.Lighting
The lighting was problematic because it was raining at the time, but I liked the deeper colors caused by the cloud cover. The fans in the stands were not so happy to see the rain come.Equipment
Canon 1DX, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM at 155mm, handheld, no flash f/3.5, 1/60, ISO 100Inspiration
Panning presents great challenges, particularly when the lighting is dim and your target is traveling about 30 mph in the rain. During the 11 seconds of her ride, I took 38 images. I try to focus on her head and if I catch it, hope there might be other parts of her or her horse which are in focus too. I enjoy shooting other events at the rodeo but in comparison, panning shots in the Barrel Race present the most challenging opportunity.Editing

When I shoot the Frontier Days Rodeo, I have my Canon 1DX; my inherited antique Canon 500mm f/4.5; my Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L II; my Canon 16-35mm for shots over the chutes; rain covers; lens cleaners; extra batteries and cards.Feedback
In rodeo shots, I try to remember that to get a good photo there should be good combinations of the animal and the rider since they are team which is in competition. When I posted this on Viewbug I got a great comment about the intensity of Jackie Ganter, the rider, "Dear present and or future life partner, try hard to stay on her good side. I'm just sayin' :-)" BillW. So the moral is capture as much of the rider's personality as possible during a frantic ride.
