In order to gain a sense of place in Portland, Maine, I walked around the alleyways and back streets. I came across the old and new dock, fishing and leisure boats, seagulls and lobster traps. Setting up my camera, I knew what I wanted frame-wise, and my exposure was adjusted by a base exposure based off of a sunny day.

I made this photograph in Portland Maine.Time
I made this photograph toward the end of the Day on Saturday September 29th. 2018 at 3:43 pm. The light was angled toward the horizon, and the time frame gave me enough time to go to LLBean.Lighting
The light at this time of day gave the image a textured feeling, the clouds reflected light back into the shadows, and most importantly it afforded me to use a small aperture, and fast shutter speed to freeze the motion of the seagulls. The light provided depth with the shadows, extending the view of the water out to the ocean.Equipment
My camera was a Nikon D850. I used a Nikkor AF-S 18 to 35 lens to stretch perspective. A gitzo XL carbon fiber tripod with a gitzo 3 way head. I also used a trip to release the shutter. This gave me the freedom to watch the scene, and the movement of the birds.Inspiration
I scout out the backways of a place. This gives me the opportunity to remove myself from other photographers. The "Harbor Fish Market" represented the docks that the working boats and men and women use to provide for themselves.Editing
I adjusted the exposures, and lightly sharpened the boards on the side of the dock's building using a High Pass Filter in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I had my travel backpack that contained a zone-6 modified pentax light meter, a Nikon 850, and 2 lenses, an 18-35 and a 24-70 Nikkor AF-S. On this occasion I also had my Pentax 67 to make some infrared photographs.Feedback
My advice would be to find your spot. Look at the scene and set up to best represent what you see and feel about the subject. Watch the light interacting with the elements in your photograph. Try to make time to use your senses to ingest a Sense of Place. If you hold your hand over the right side of this picture you will see how the composition looses it's strength.
