Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in a hotel room in North Bay Ontario. This is one of the brides maids among 6 others finishing up with details.

Time

The time was around 1:00 pm

Lighting

There was window light but girls were in different spots around the room so I used a single led light that was held by an assistant. This made it easy to go around and work. They loved the attention being photographed in there new looks and outfits.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D750 and a 70-200 and a 35mm prime between groups and singles portraits. I had a helper to hold a Westcott ice light as a continual light source this made it quick easy to see what I liked.

Inspiration

I watched for natural and expressive poses as the girls as were doing their final touches like earrings, make-up, jewellery etc. I went around getting them to pose or recreate a moment that caught my attention. It was a lot of fun and they enjoyed being in the character style of their outfits. Although it was buzzing with excitement, their enthusiasm with their new looks made the getting ready part the easier part of the wedding shoot.

Editing

Not a lot of retouching here, a little skin retouching and sharpening. I try to get as much in-camera as possible.

In my camera bag

For a wedding I would have 2 Nikon camera bodies, a 20-2.8, 35-1.4, 105-2.8 macro, 70-200mm zoom. a couple of small flashes and a bigger battery pack flash unit,

Feedback

Always ask for the maximum amount of time at each location. It's well worth it to ask for 2 hrs, for family, bridesmaids and bride. When you get there relax and take your time, don't let yourself get overwhelmed with all the busyness. Work your way through each member or group. Have some ideas that you seen on line like window light and poses, watch for moments that are pleasing, ask them to recreate it if you missed it. They will always love to get a great shot.
