Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a rural part of Puslinch in Ontario Canada on a Beef Cattle Farm called Wagyu World.

Time

This was taken at early twilight and then stacked in sequence to Dusk to capture the light painting.

Lighting

I wanted to capture this abandon street rail car and light paint it from within. The lighting was hard to control as it sits very close to a heavily traveled highway. As a result the cars headlights help with the exterior lighting but also give a feel to the light streaks across the street car representing it's previous built use.I used a Youngnuo video light on 3/4 power setting to illuminate the inside of the interior to make the car look like it was still receiving power. Then used a 2 second quick pan flash with a led flashlight on medium power to capture the light shinning off the metal. The light reflected alot better in projection out than at first attempt and left it as it was a used amplified effects for the front navigation cab light using Adobe CC filters.

Equipment

I use a Canon 70d apsc with a Manfrotto 190x pro B tripod with a 498RC2 ball head that allows to me setup fast and utilize unique angles closer to the ground with how the tripod can lay almost flat. The lens I use alot in my composites is a Sigma 10mm 2.8 DC discontinued lens with Irix Nd Gel filters.I use a Yongnuo 300RN 3 video light for my light painting and a Yongnuo YN600EX-RT as my primary slash along with my new Manfrotto Befree back pack that I won from Viewbug.

Inspiration

I have a passion to create composites of aging abandon places or things to bring them back to life in a surreal approach to how these places or things where used in there day.I have traveled past this location for years and always wonder how it became to be resting in the middle of a field and how many people have used that in both it's previous and current life.

Editing

All my photos go through a defined process of editing that I have come up using various techniques and creative processes drawn from inspirations from pros like Brooke Shaden/Ben Willmore/Lisa Carney.I shot and edited my raw file into Lightroom C.C from lightroom each photo goes through basic editing for contrast/Clarity/Tones/Highlights,it then left Lightroom into Camera raw where some more contrasts and lens corrections where made for the fisheye warp then opened to Adobe Photoshop. In Adobe Photoshop C.C I created several layers where I can create atmosphere and edit towards the composition I wanted to create. The first layer is background manipulation with layers of clouds and light along with more added stars on a overlay layer to give the feel of the story being brought forward.I increased the ground foliage using Nik Color efex Pro 4 plugin and Luminar 3 to add more definition using Sunrays adjusted inside the light source to amplify the projected feel for the light out the street cars windows. It needed a streetcar headlight so I added a Render lens flare filter to give it that certain feel,it then was merged and then reedited again using Cross Processing and Glamour glow.

In my camera bag

I received a new Manfrotto Befree back pack from Viewbug which allows me to carry more gear on more adventures. In my bag is a Canon 70d with a Lexar 64gb SDXC Class 2 card with 150mb/per second write speed. My primary lens is a Sigma 18-35 DC art series customized perimeters on the Usb dock to sharp background at focus at 2.8 and micro adjusted plus 14 on body.My second go to lens is the Sigma 10mm DC that I use for everything and allows me to capture wide scenes and weird perspectives.A canon older 85mm prime lens for fast portrait use and close shots for utilization. I carry four good micro fibre clothes along with two in my pocket one fine one course, along with Zeiss lens wipes just in case. I have four back up camera batteries to be able to shoot all day without worrying about power alongside appropriate charging cords.Various ND 10 stop filters and my trusty video light in case I shoot late at night doing night photography and a few powerbars for much needed fuel along the way.
