Location
This photo was taken on the west bank of Rotorua lake in New Zealand. We were on a tour of the country during the 2017 Lions series.Time
Unsure of the exact time, but this was just before day break. It was winter and I remember it being very cold walking out the back of our accommodation following the river about 5 minutes down to the lake.Lighting
It was still dark when I first got to the lake, giving me about 20 minutes to walk the banks to try and find an interesting shot. I happened to come across these birds sitting on branches breaching the waterline just in time for day break.Equipment
I used a Canon 500d with a 300mm lens set up on a basic tripod. Due to the low lighting and extended shutter speed the tripod was definitely neededInspiration
I try to at least once on any break or trip, to set my alarm to get out and for sunrise. I love how quite and still it is at that time of day. I always take the camera to try and capture those moments.Editing
I tried to bring out the burnt orange colouring that was so evident with the naked eye.In my camera bag
I carry round a pretty basic set up. A Canon 500d with the stock 55mm lens. A larger 300mm lens, tripod, and cleaning kitFeedback
New Zealand is a photographer's paradise, there are stunning scenes around every corner. While it can be luck that you get the perfect shot, there is a reason why certain people are more lucky than others and that's down to effort and perseverance. The more effort you put in, the luckier you become finding that shot your proud of.
