You certainly captured the feeling of first snow fall. The fall leaves are the perfect indication of season, and the subtle bits of colour balances the overall cool tone.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at my home on Trout Lake in Northern Ontario, Canada. The view from my porch looks straight down the lake. This view is of the houses to the left of me.

Time

I woke up the morning of October 13th, 2018 and looked out my window to see the first snow of the season. Even for Northern Ontario this was early to see this amount of snow. The leaves haven't even fallen from the trees yet. But it was so beautiful so I grabbed my camera and took this picture.

Lighting

This photo was taken in early morning and fairly dark. I wanted to take this before the snow melted. So due to the fact it was fairly dark, and a landscape in natural light, I decided to take multiple exposures to be able to open up the shore line and keep detail in the sky without blowing it out.

Equipment

I took this picture with my Canon 5D Mark IV, on a tripod with a 85mm Sigma Lens, f/1.4, ISO 200, 5 exposure HDR, various shutter speeds.

Inspiration

Living on a lake, the first thing I do every morning is to grab my camera and go out to see if there will be an awesome sunrise. This day was cloudy and the snow was a big surprise. It was magical!

Editing

I use a third party Photoshop plug in for HDR merging which does a great job. I then went back to Photoshop and selectively masked the colors of the leaves to enhance them for the contrast against the blues in the image. I also adjusted levels to increase contrast and bring out the clouds and also used the high pass filter with the overlay blend mode to sharpen. There was a floating swimming platform on the right side of the photo that I removed as well as a poll used to hang a volleyball net on the left side. Living on the lake I take a lot of photos of the lake and I have to remove that pole from many pictures! Lol

In my camera bag

I use a Canon 5D Mark IV camera. I use only prime lenses because of the sharpness and wider aperture. I have many Canon L series lenses, 14mm, 35mm, 100mm macro, 135mm and 200mm. I then decided to try Sigma and have the 50mm Art lens and the Sigma 85mm lens which was used for this shot. Even though it can be a real pain to carry all of these lenses and have to switch them all of the time, I really like the wide aperture for low light shooting. I shoot production stills on movies and very rarely shoot anything over f/2.8 as the sets are usually very dark and I can use lower ISO's.

Feedback

I would suggest multiple exposures on a tripod for early morning/sunrise/sunset landscapes to open up as much of the scene as possible. You can do a lot in post to bring out color and detail when you blend the multiple exposures.
