Location
The photo was taken while walking with friends and our dogs in a dry wash area near my home. I was playing fetch with the dog using a rubber ball. He always brought it back to me to toss again. This time he couldn't find the ball and brought back this large stick as a substitute.Time
Early morning around 7am.Lighting
Fortunately, it was an overcast morning which provided great lighting without harsh shadows.Equipment
I used an older CanonEOS Digital Rebel XSI with the standard kit lens, hand-held using available light. I normally use my Canon 60D with an 18 to 200mm lens, The Canon XSI was lighter and easier to carry on the walk.Inspiration
I always have a camera with me on walks, looking for any possible interesting images. When I saw the dog returning with the log instead of the ball, I had to take the shot. He seemed so proud and intense to bring back something when he couldn't find the ball.Editing
I use Photoshop to adjust my photos and to convert the image to black and white. I retained a copy of the color image, but the black and white version seemed a much better choice for this image. In my camera bag
I generally work with my Canon 60D with an 18-200mm zoom lens. I have a tripod and a bipod but I don't usually carry them with me unless I feel the need. I prefer to travel light.Feedback
My only advice is to be aware of your surroundings, always looking for photo opportunities. Look for shapes, patterns, unique compositions, shadows, and lighting. Be watchful and aware of the entire scene including backgrounds and unwanted items in your composition. Remember that your mind's eye sees the photo you want to capture, but the camera sees everything so compose the shot as best you can to only capture what you want. Explore different viewpoints and compositions when time allows. Sometimes, as was the case with this shot, you just have act quickly and hope for the best. Some photo opportunities will happen in a flash.
