Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Kiama Lighthouse, Kiama NSW Australia. This is the one I love the most. I used only a polarising filter and have not added any effects.

Time

I got up about 3:30am to get there well before sunrise and took a series of photos of the pre-sunrise sky. It was 28th June 2014 which is the middle of winter here. This photo was taken at 6:56 am.

Lighting

I wanted to capture the pre-dawn light before the sunlight flooded the sky. This was accomplished with a slow shutter and low ISO.

Equipment

This one was shot on my old but trusty Canon 40D with a Tamron 10-24mm lens mounted on a tripod. Here is the EXIF data for this photo. Canon EOS 40D 10-24mm ƒ/3.5 10.0 mm 1/100 100 Flash (off, did not fire) Compression - JPEG (old-style) Make - Canon Orientation - Horizontal (normal) X-Resolution - 72 dpi Y-Resolution - 72 dpi Date and Time (Modified) - 2014:06:28 06:56:51 YCbCr Positioning - Centered ISO Speed - 100 Exif Version - 0221 Date and Time (Original) - 2014:06:28 06:56:51 Date and Time (Digitized) - 2014:06:28 06:56:51 Components Configuration - Y, Cb, Cr, - Exposure Bias - 0 EV Metering Mode - Multi-segment Sub Sec Time - 83 Sub Sec Time Original - 83 Sub Sec Time Digitized - 83 Flashpix Version - 0100 Color Space - sRGB Focal Plane X-Resolution - 4438.355556 Focal Plane Y-Resolution - 4445.969231 Focal Plane Resolution Unit - inches Custom Rendered - Normal Exposure Mode - Manual White Balance - Auto Scene Capture Type - Standard GPS Version ID - 2.3.0.0 GPS Latitude Ref - South GPS Latitude - 34 deg 40' 18.59" GPS Longitude Ref - East GPS Longitude - 150 deg 51' 44.79" Coded Character Set - UTF8 Envelope Record Version - 4 Urgency - 3 Application Record Version - 4 XMPToolkit - XMP Core 5.4.0 Firmware - Firmware Version 1.1.1 Flash Compensation - 0 Serial Number - 1130501571 Lens Info - 10-24mm f/3.5 Camera ID - 13483 Camera Type - Digital SLR

Inspiration

I watched the sunrise for few days prior and after checking the weather forecast for cloud cover, I thought this would be a great location to capture this spectacular pre-dawn display of colour.

Editing

There was no need for post processing other than adding my then logo.

In my camera bag

I use a Canon EOS 40D and include a variety of lenses both Canon and Tamron. I particularly love shooting with the Tamron 10-24mm and the Tamron 150-600mm G2.

Feedback

You need to be willing to get up early and take many shots and possibly over a number a days. Who knows when the sunrise and clouds will combine for such a photo.
