Behind The Lens

Location

This image was shot in Buhl Park, Sharon, Pennsylvania.

Time

While visiting my inlaws I got up early one morning and drove to this beautiful park just after sunrise. My aim was to find and shoot things I had not shot before. After a couple of hours I was walking back to where I had parked and came across all these different mushrooms growing under a stand of trees.

Lighting

The mushrooms in this image were just inside a shaded area caused by the trees. The late morning light was coming in just behind and on top of the mushrooms. I used a small white reflector leaned against my backpack to put a little light on the front of the mushrooms.

Equipment

I shot this with a Nikon D810 on the ground and a Tamron 70 - 200 2.8 racked all the way out. 1/125 of a second at F8. ISO 640.

Inspiration

This area was filled with mushrooms and the light was coming in nicely. Just so many varieties in little groups and some separately. Couldn't resist. I liked the natural back lighting on these mushrooms. Spend about an hour shooting there.

Editing

The light was really nice. I used Lightroom to set the white and black points. Adjusted the the highlights and shadows a little. Then added a little Clarity, Dehaze, and Contrast.

In my camera bag

Usually carry my Nikon D810 with my Tamron 70 - 200 2.8. Depending on what I might be shooting I could have a 24 -70 2.8, a 50 1.8, or 70 - 300 with me. My 70 - 300 isn't a fast lens, but when paired with my D 7000 I can get pretty good reach. I also carry a Yongnuo speedlight with a trigger. I might also have my Induro tripod or my Platypod with me also.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to play and try something new or different. That was my mind set the morning I went and shot this image. Pick a day to play, decide what you want to try or work on and just go have fun doing it. I'm sure people who saw me laying face down in the dew covered grass taking pictures of mushrooms thought I was crazy, but, then again the park director saw me and asked if I would post some of my shots on the park website.
