Killdeer are a common shore bird in the San Francisco bay area. They use a technique much like other animals to lead predators away from the vulnerable nest by faking a broken wing or leg. Once they reach a safe distance they will suddenly fly off. This one was photographed at a local pond in San Jose, California.
