Behind The Lens

Location

This shot is at the top of Ratnagari Hill. It lies outside the desert town of Pushkar in Rajasthan, India. The lady is is reaching the Savitri Temple, having traveled several hundred kilometres from another city for her pilgrimage. In her hand is a bag of rose petals to sprinkle at the feet of the wives of Lord Brahma, Savitri and Gayatri statues. There are 650 stone steps to the temple. Each step is a bit over 12 inches (30 cms) high.

Time

The shot is taken around 10:45am. I didn't begin the climb until 10am. The temperature was around 35 degs Celcius. I'd estimate the lady is in her late seventies. As you can see by the size of the steps, she was tiny, but she kept pace with me to the top. I gave her a banana and some water, which she gratefully accepted, in appreciation of her company and allowing me to take the shot.

Lighting

It was hot and there was a lot of haze. I was lucky to have the town of Pushkar visible in the background.

Equipment

This was an auto setting, taken with a compact Nikon Coolpix S9900, my first digital camera in 2007. I knew almost nothing of the technical side of photography. I knew what I liked to see in a shot. The work I put into getting this one, paid off.

Inspiration

This little lady kept me company for most of the 45 minute climb. It was only as I was reaching the peak that I realised that a shot of her reaching the top would capture what her pilgrimage had been like.

Editing

The Coolpix S9900 is only a five megapixel camera. I managed to improve the image to what you see, using Adobe Elements.

In my camera bag

Back then, I had a 1.5megapixel Nokia phone, and the Coolpix. Now, I have an Olympus E-m10 mk II with a 40-150 zoom, and a Fujifilm finepix X100-t fixed lens.
