Behind The Lens

Location

One of the wildest trip I've been on - went to Alaska for 10 days, we did everything from sailing near the glaciers, bumping into a baby moose in Denali national park, and this plane ride deep into the mountains in the park. There's no other way to get there except by plane. We by chance caught some of the best and most peaceful weather that day. This was taken where we landed, surrounded by three of the tallest mountains in the park, no wind, no other people, it was almost like being on another planet.

Time

It was around noon, but at that altitude there's rarely any sun, from the base camp everything's covered under a thick blanket of cloud. Weather forecasted that there would be a snow storm rolling in later that afternoon - we got lucky and was the last flight for the rest of the day.

Lighting

Taking photos in Alaska was challenging. Everything's blanketed in pure white snow. Its one thing to see it in person, entireely another to capture it on camera. Even with a polarizer the light was often too bright. But it was also a blessing, since it makes everything else, the mountains and the plane stand out in the background that much more.

Equipment

This was on a canon 60D, with an 18-135mm lens. We had to travel light on the plane due to the weight limit. It was freezing cold, surprised that both my hands and my camera even survived!

Inspiration

It was just such a peaceful moment, I stood there and just tried to take everything in for a moment. Honestly I didn't even know how to begin capturing it on my camera. The pilot told us it was almost time to leave. I thought it'd be a good memory to have to capture how we got there - in a vintage jet.

Editing

There was some minor adjustments for lighting, the usual, exposure, high lights, and reduced down the saturation which is my usual MO. Some images don't require too much post processing, especially this image since I wanted to maintain the natural and raw feel to it.

In my camera bag

The Alaska trip was impromptu, and most of the places we went required minimal equipments, so I didn't have much with me, just a Canon 60D and the 18-135 lens, but they definitely got the job done. Now I have a Canon 5D Mark V and a 24-105 lens.

Feedback

When I have my camera with it, i feel that I look at everything around me differently. A little more attentive and a little more in detail. I keep trying to see something I'd otherwise miss. Sometimes capturing the feeling of something isn't about capturing your entire environment, but rather a small portion of it that reminds you of that distinctive memory. If it brings something to me, like this picture reminds me of the cool air brushing through the second I opened the door of the jet and jumped onto the snow, it'd probably remind others of a feeling too, it doesn't have to be the same memory, but I hope the feeling of freedom and peace is all there.
