Behind The Lens

Location

We did this shoot at the home studio in 2017. We wanted a comfortable space where the baby wouldn't get distracted... although he did..lol

Time

It was about 2 pm in the afternoon but since it was at the home studio, the time was as relevant but it had to be when the baby was a wake and wasn't miserable (as babies sometimes are).

Lighting

We did a 3 point light setup. The background light was far left of the camera, pointed directly on the wall. The key light was also camera left and the fill light was camera right. We had been doing a few shot before with just the model so we had the lighting already set before we had her son in the shot.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 7D Mk ii with 24-105mm f/4. Flash system was Canon 430 EX ii for the background light and also to trigger the two L400 Chinese studio flashes (using what I had). Yongnuo trigger and transceiver.

Inspiration

We wanted to do a mother and child shoot but with baby's head resting on mommy's shoulder. I don't remember where the inspiration came from but what we had desired did not go as planned. I guess being so close to his food source (mommy's breast), he decided it was lunchtime and elected to change the plan. We did several shots while trying to persuade him to rest his head on her shoulders but he would have none of that..lol. In the end, we ended up with something different but just as beautiful.

Editing

Some post processing was done. I used lightroom to adjust the contrast, color and exposure. Somehow I prefer Photoshop conversion of Black and White and it looked smoother.

In my camera bag

I walk with Canon 5D Mk iv, Canon 7D Mk ii, my beloved 70-200mm f/2.8, 24-105mm f/4 and Tonika 16-28mm wide f/2.8. Godox TT600 with X1 trigger, Zomei tripod.

Feedback

Since this was a studio shoot, I could plan the lighting and the other simple things in advance but babies have a mind of their own. Some photographers are great with children, I am new to shooting babies and still learning in that area of photography. Look for the best shot when it comes to babies but don't get caught up and not have fun at the same time. Have everything you can think of done fore hand so there is little stress to the child(ren).
