Faaaantastic!

Behind The Lens

Location
The picture is taken in my home town, Belgrade, Serbia. It is a Clock Tower (Sahat Kula), at the biggest tourist destination in the city, Kalemegdan Fortress.
Time
It is a blue hour shot, taken just as the sun set below the horizon.
Lighting
This was somewhat a lucky moment. The evening light was beautiful on it's own, golden and blue hour is the best time for city shots, but then the small tourist train showed up and I got those amazing headlight trails, which made the composition much more interesting.
Equipment
Back then, I was shooting with Sony A6000 and kit lens 16-50mm. In this case, I also used a Variable ND filter to get longer exposure and of course I was on a tripod, very cheap one. This picture is great example that you don't need expensive equipment to make a great shot
Inspiration
I'm always liked taking pictures of my hometown, but a lot of them are just ordinary. So, I started going out during sunset time, trying to catch city attractions with a good light, and interesting skies. This evening it payed off!
Editing
Sometimes it is very hard to get everything that you need, the way you imagined it, in one shot. This was such a case. As I mentioned, I was lucky with the train showing up and giving me that leading line of the light trails, but I had to take two 30 seconds shots to get the trial through entire frame (it is very slow train) and then blend them in Photoshop. I also decided to change the sky. That night was completely clear, no clouds at all, so I used a picture of the sky taken near by on a different day, and added some movement to it to match the scene. After blending the sky in, I did some color grading to the tower and foreground, to match the colors of the sky, which are very real.
In my camera bag
At the time this photo is taken I had a Sony A6000 with kit lens 16-50mm and 55-210mm. Since then, I have improved my setup. Now I carry Sony A7RIII, with several lenses, Sony 24-105mm f4, Samyang 14mm f2.8 (manual), Sony 85mm f1.8 and Sony 100-400mm f4.5-5.6. I always have a few filters with me, CPL, ND Variable and ND1000, all from K&F Concept. I also use either a small travel Bonfoto Carbon Fiber tripod, or sturdy Manfrotto 055 aluminum tripod.
Feedback
Often we go past the things and places we got used to seeing everyday and don't realize how beautiful they can look if conditions get right. I like carrying the camera with me at all times, capturing as many shots as I can, and just paying attention to details, looking at things from different angles. Then, you might realize the potential of certain places, and you can plan much better shot, figure out when is the best time to take it and what equipment you need. All that you need to do after that, is go out and enjoy yourself, the right shot will come!
