One of the best places to visit is Hemis Monastery which is 48 kiloneters from Leh , across the indus river. It is the largest and richest gompa built in 1630. The monastery, and the Hemis village was hidden from the rest, as if protected intentionally by the stony little mountains.

The daily life of monks was dedicated to worship, in addition to their attendance, the monks spent several hours in reading from the Bible, private prayer, and meditation. During the day the monks worked hard in the Monastery and on its lands.

We reached the monastery early as expected. As in all the monasteries, the big room is used for prayers and some meals. But, in this particular room there's no light well here, the light comes directly from windows. The monks being seated back to the windows on their little cushion and reading their books.
