In 1995 the Mongolian Provincial authority opened a new 945 km railway line between Jining and Tongliao. Over 100 steam locomotives were purchased to operate the line. From the town of JingPeng there was a steep climb through the mountains to the summit at Shandian then down to Reshui. Between Reshui and JingPeng there are 6 tunnels. Winter temperatures of minus 40 were not unusual.

Here in January 1991 two QJ have just left tunnel 4. It was more than 30 minutes walk to this location, on this morning the sun has just beaten the train to the track, the front loco is not leaking steam and the wind is right.
