Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken at Julian Rocks (2.5kms of the Coast) at Byron Bay, Australia. on a nice warm summer's day as that is when the manta rays are normally around the Dive site

Time

I remember taking this around midday on my second dive for the day as it getting tricky to take shots of the sharks and Rays, shooting upward it the water and having too much light behind the subjects.

Lighting

when shooting underwater shots I use twin guide 32 strobes so I can light up the subject properly and put back in the colour that the water takes out. also when shooting large marine creature I tend to have my strobes pointing outwards.

Equipment

so I use an Olympus OMD EM1 with a wide angle lens that has a short minimum focus distance for underwater big creature shooting, and this in a nauticam housing with twin guide 32 strobes, running of the cameras flash and connected by fiber optic cables.

Inspiration

Love being in the water with manta rays, they are such a big graceful animal to be around, and that is what I was trying to capture in this shot.

Editing

decided to make it a black and white shot to add a bit more mood to the shot and bring out the background a bit more.

In my camera bag

I tend to keep a small bag when doing Underwater photography as I am either shooting Wide angle and use a 12m F1.8 m4/3 Olympus Lens or shot macro with a 60mm macro lens, there is the usual Camera Olympus OMD EM1 some spare batteries the underwater housing (Nauticam) with either a dome port or a macro port and the 2 Sea&Sea YS250 pro strobes and a 2500 lumin focus light all rated to 100m depth.

Feedback

get a good housing that lets you get to all the features you need and make sure you have some good strobes that you can position as you need. do your shot home work and learn the creature behaviors and know the dive site and what to expect as well the conditions you are diving.
