I absolutely love this shot of Hong Kong! In fact I love how unique it is. You see so many elements of the CBD such as buildings, delivery guy on bike, the ding dings, and yet elements like swarms of people, and crazy traffic are gone.

Because of that, I choose this photo as the winner of my Hong Kong Contest. Brings me back to Hong Kong in so many cool ways. It's original, and takes you away from the more common shots you see of the city. Well done and congrats on the win!

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the middle of the CBD of Hong Kong as the city was waking up.

Time

I had a day transit in Hong Kong during my return to France from New Zealand. My plane landed early morning a beautiful sunny and hot sunday. When I finnally reached the city from the airport I was surprised to see the streets almost empty in one of the most populated city in the world. The time here was maybe 10 am and temperature almost 30 degrees Celcius.

Lighting

When I came out of the air conditioned plane and took the subway my camera was very cold but as I walked out in the street the temperature was suddenly hot and it took me some time to get rid of all the mist on my lense. The sun was pretty strong so do the shadows so I was looking for a spot where I could hide the sun behind the buildings and still have a good lighting on the glass surfaces of the buildings.

Equipment

I shot this with my Sony alpha 7S II and my Samyang 14mm f2.8. I don't use tripod for street photography because I often want to be as discreet as possible.

Inspiration

When I came out of the subway and saw the skyscrappers everywhere I changed my lense and decided to explore the CBD with my 14mm wide angle. I love the perspectives changing when I move my lense up and down. When I realized that the streets were almost empty I thought of making photos with only one human subject in the frame. Because Hong Kong was an eternal crowded city to me before I came there. Maybe I was just lucky to be there when nobody is in the street but I wanted to keep that memory of a small town mood in the world famous CBD.

Editing

What I did here is keep the right building vertical so I adjusted slightly the perspectives. The light was pretty good so I just brought up the shadows in the dark spots and saturated a bit the colors to make them pop more as Hong Kong is a very colorful city.

In my camera bag

I have a Sony a7S II camera with a CANON 24-70mm f4, a SAMYANG 14mm f2.8, a CANON 75-300mm f4-5.6 and a CANON 50mm f1.8. I also have a M42 adapter and an Helios 44-2 58mm f2.8 lens made in USSR. And a Pola filter.

Feedback

If you want to play with perspectives in a skyscrappers environment I would advise you to take a wide angle with you, or even a fisheye lense. There is a lot of very interesting shots to make in such a city when you wander through the giant streets. A good idea I tested as well is vertical panoramas, blended in Lightroom afterwards. Hong Kong is a very colorful city with a lot of ads, texts and lines everywhere very good for compositions. If you can display a grid lense on your screen it will help you to find where to put which line.
