This photograph was taken in my home studio in Charleston, SC! It sits right in between my living and dining room, it's cramped but you can still create great things in small spaces!Time
This is a studio shot, but it was taken in the afternoon.Lighting
I wanted clean, almost natural-looking light. The lighting needed to bring out the colors in all of the flowers and capture the beautiful details of the dress.Equipment
Canon 80D, 50mm 1.4 prime lens.Inspiration
I really wanted to work with this model, Janelle Starrett, and initially had a different idea for the shoot. But the night before, I thought of the idea of making a hanging "garden" of flowers, so I ran to the store, brought some fake flowers, and built and hung the set. I inverted the photograph so it looks like Janelle is falling gently toward the ground, like Alice down the rabbit hole!Editing
I used the dodge and burn method in photoshop to retouch skin, and lightroom to add my own style through the use of split-toning, the HSL sliders, and basic light adjustments. In my camera bag
I was just gifted a Sigma Art 18-35 1.8 which I've been loving lately, but I also love my Canon 50mm 1.4 prime and 24mm 1.4. Otherwise, any fun props, tools to alter light or to put in front of the lens for distortion. I love to experiment with fun, out of the box tools. Of course, a notebook to write down and sketch ideas is also a must!Feedback
Keeping it clean with the lighting and background helped balance out the colors, values, and textures in the flowers and dress, but above all this shoot was all about having fun and being creative. I've found that creating your own props always produces something unique that you can be proud of!
