Location
This photograph was taken in Mersea Island, United Kingdom. I am lucky enough to live close to the coast so seaside is often a destination of choice when I go shooting.Time
The morning of 25th of March was just perfect for a quick flight and some photography. Spring is one of my favourite seasons. Days are getting longer, mornings brighter and weather conditions milder. Aerial photography is very much weather dependant so better conditions mean more flying and shooting.Lighting
It was an overcast day, the light was diffused and very soft. I think that having these conditions was vital for this shot - evenly spread light and no harsh shadows really helped to bring out more detail and definition. It also allowed me to play around with slightly longer exposure times which helped me to create a little bit of motion with birds flying around the boat.Equipment
This image was taken with DJI Mavic Pro drone and ND8 filter. I love experimenting with slow shutter speed so I tend to use Neutral Density filters quite a lot. I also used 3D printed extension legs to raise the drone a little higher from the ground for taking-off and landing.Inspiration
Growing up in a small town in Lithuania, on the coast of the Baltic sea, made me really appreciate the nature and especially the seaside. Smell of seaweed, sound of breaking waves and the feel of sand when you walk on the beach always reminds me of my childhood and home ... I believe this is why I love exploring and photographing seaside around the UK as well.Editing
In my opinion, post-processing is a very important part of producing a powerful image and requires quite a lot of skill and understanding of colours and tones. Nowadays, when equipment is so advanced, automated and so easy accessible pretty much anyone can take a decent shot but not everyone can bring it to another level and make it stand out even more. This image was taken in raw (and I always shoot raw, it gives you so much more to work with) then using adobe Photoshop I adjusted contrast, highlights and shadows, played around with curves and tones and added a tiny bit of sharpness. In my camera bag
In my equipment bag you will always find my DJI Mavic Pro drone and Nikon D610 camera. And then of course all the bibs and bobs which go with them. Spare Mavic batteries, spare propellers and my beloved ND filters. With my Nikon I usually bring along 2 lenses. 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f1.8. They are so light and bright, and absolute pleasure to shoot with. And of course some lens cleaning wipes and other cleaning kit to look after my gear in various conditions.Feedback
My main advice would be not to be afraid to experiment and try new techniques, this is how we all learn. I love planning my photo trips using Google Earth (especially for aerial photography) so if you have never tried it give it a go. It is an awesome tool for finding interesting and unique locations. But most importantly always fly responsibly and safe.
