Behind The Lens

Location

The location was the internationally acclaimed Portland Rose Garden (Portland, OR). I was scouting the location for a wedding shoot.

Time

This shot was taken on a Sunday morning in late July in 2013.

Lighting

It was just natural lighting outdoors: no modifiers or flash was employed. But it was slightly overcast which provided soft lighting. And then I have more info in the Post-processing area. Suffice it to say I used spot-metering to emphasize the rose and diminish the background.

Equipment

Canon 40D, Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS, mode was Aperture priority w/metering set to: Spot-metering. No flash, natural lighting, outdoors. Shot handheld.

Inspiration

I love the intricacies of Roses, flowers in general and other patterns in nature, but roses in particular are spectacular in their geometric patterns contained within the shape of their blossoms as they bloom.

Editing

Bumped up contrast a bit and then used a slider to deepen/darken shadows even more. And bumped up the saturation a tiny bit and sharpened a little to make the dew drops pop and the edges of the petals pop a little more.

In my camera bag

Unfortunately my 40D does not work any more but now I have a Canon 7D and a 80D (which is my main shooter). The Canon 70-200mm f2.8L IS. The older Canon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5. The Canon EF-S 10-18mm STM f4.5-5.6 IS. Canon kit lenses: 18-55mm and 55-250mm STM lenses. I also usually have a Canon Powershot 540HS SX 20mp "bridge-type" camera in my bag.

Feedback

Look for ways to isolate the subject. Both thru lighting, and compositionally.
