Location
This antique Packard was a winner at a car show in Scottsdale Arizona.Time
I knew the car show would get very busy, so I went just as the gate opened at 7 AM. I then went directly to the winners area to set up and wait for that magic moment when no one else was enjoying this beautiful car.Lighting
Since it was winter in Arizona I knew the light would be perfect for a side shot as the sun was just over the horizon directly behind me.Equipment
I used a canon 15-85 wide angle lens mounted to a canon7D body which was handheld while I was in a crouch position.Inspiration
This antique car is a thing of beauty. I was compelled to capture that in the best possible light with no people in the shot. It did take some patience, but it paid off big time.Editing
I wanted to have the bright red car pop so I used Photoshop CC to create the black background and foreground. It was already on a mat as it was in the winners area.In my camera bag
For a car show with hundreds of cars spread over a huge area I travel light as I will be there for the entire day. So on this occasion I just had the camera and lens I was going to use. I usually go with a predetermined purpose and know the equipment I need. I do carry some general purpose stuff in the car in case I run across a good photo op going to or from my planned location. I carry a tripod, extra batteries and cards, cleaning materials, and a general purpose lens like my Tamron 35-270.Feedback
To get this shot you have to be on location and set up before the crowd arrives and even then you need to wait for the few individuals who have the same idea to move on.
