Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in my yard in Jacksonville, FL. It is a banana leaf as it first appears and before it unfurls. I love gardening and there are so many amazing things to photograph as close as your backyard.

Time

I took this in the morning as only one side was gently lit by the sun.

Lighting

Nature handled the lighting for me. These leaves usually appear overnight and you see them in the morning. They unfurl pretty quickly. I shot it with no flash.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS Rebel T4i with 70-300mm Zoom lens

Inspiration

This was my first banana plant, so everything about it has been a new experience. When these new leaves first appeared I was fascinated with the color, shape, size, and texture. How fun to watch nature takes its course and unfurl into a large, beautiful green leaf.

Editing

I did not have to do any post processing to this image at all.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Canon EOS Rebel T4i body. Photography for me is just a hobby and something I love, so this camera suits me fine. I have my Canon Zoom lens EF-S, 18-55 mm. I also have my Canon Zoom lens 70-300 mm. I also have my Canon wide angle lens EFS 10-22 mm. This gives me incredible panoramic landscape shots. I also use it a lot for architectural photography. It gives me the ability to shoot an entire room, furniture, windows and all.

Feedback

There is beauty and intrigue all around us. You only have to open your eyes and see it. Always have your camera with you because you never know when a surprise is right around the corner. If you love to take nature shots, look closely at what is growing from season to season. I prefer my zoom lens because I get the object in focus and most everything else blurs out naturally. I love macro photography because the inner workings of a flower seem to be a tiny universe all to itself. Incredible beauty just waiting to be captured!
