Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in Namibia on a photography trip in 2018.

Time

A small group of us awoke before dawn and travelled in the dark to the largest dune in the Namib desert. As the sun rose and lit up the side of the dune I focused in on the tree as the light hit it.

Lighting

The warm early sunlight from the side caused soft shadows that emphasised the form and texture of the dune.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5d mark iii with a Sigma 100 - 600mm lens set on a tripod.

Inspiration

Our group were competing with another group of tourists who were only interested in walking along the ridge to see the sunrise from the top. You may be able to see the footsteps on the ridge. So I decided to zoom in to avoided a line of people and liked the story it told of the tree against the dune.

Editing

I worked from a raw file so it just needed some contrast and a small amount of cropping to place the tree on the bottom third.

In my camera bag

On this occasion I had all my lenses with me to allow me to capture the desert in different ways. I love my Canon 17-40m wide angle and the Sigma 100-600m and the Canon 70-200m. If I had to just carry one I would use Canon 24-105m travel lens. A Manfrotto travel tripod.

Feedback

Sometimes it's a good idea to simplify a landscape scene by using a long lens and zooming in on one or two elements.
