Behind The Lens

Location

This image was clicked at Ndutu region in Tanzania. I clicked this on a trip to Tanzania spent few days in Ndutu and then went to Central Serengeti.

Time

This image was clicked in the morning, closer to noon. We were waiting at the marsh area expecting lions to come to drink water, there were some wildebeests and zebras drinking water, i saw a group of vehicles slowly moving towards the marsh area and realized they were following a lioness. I took a chance and asked the guide to take me up the hill and wait. I had requested for a modified vehicle where i could get images at low level, I surveyed the place carefully to see what are the exit points for the zebras, they cant run into the marsh or run towards the lioness came and only way to escape to run up the hill. Reluctantly my guide took me to the spot where i wanted, his apprehension was that we could miss a kill sequence, my guess vehicles movement would have already blown the cover of the lioness.

Lighting

Lighting was getting to be a bit harsh, sun was up, clouds were on and off, when clouds moved away light was a bit of a challenge.

Equipment

Body : Canon 5D MIII Lens: 70-200 F/2.8 ISII and used bean bag for support.

Inspiration

The anticipation and planning paid off the way the zebras and wildebeest came towards our vehicle and split right in front our vehicle helped in making some dramatic images, as i kept the whole windows open all the way till the floor i had lot of dust on my face. But i was thrilled and excited with all the action

Editing

I dont post process wildlife images much, i just make minor edits like contrast, spot removal, Vibrance, Shadows and highlights, Sharpening etc., I wanted to make this image in monochrome for the impact and for the color of zebras.

In my camera bag

For wildlife photography : ( now i switched to Nikon ) : Nikon D5, D850 and Lenses 180-400 F/4, 70-200 F/2.8, Tamron 15-30mmf/2.8 Bean. bag, Tripod for birding in particular ( Gitzo legs and Joby head), Intervalometer One action camera either a Go Pro or a Sony Rain cover is a must

Feedback

Planning and visualization is key for making good images. Also understanding animal behavior is very important in wildlife photography. Keep experimenting once you get the record shots and stock images try creative images and different perspectives. No harm in trying something unconventional. End of the day it is art.
