This photo was taken in London on the second night of a two week trip. London has such amazing architecture, beautiful cityscapes were around every corner.Time
I believe this was taken on the way back to our hostel, at about 9pm. My travel companion and I were crossing tower bridge, and the sunset was beautiful and warm. Ferries and tour boats were going back and forth in the water, and I always love getting light trails, so I decided to go for a long exposure.Lighting
The sunset did all the work! Although, the light trails and starbursts are always a nice addition to a cityscape.Equipment
I use a Sony a6500, and this photo was taken with a Samyang 14mm f2.8 ultrawide, though it was most likely set to f8 or f11. I used a Manfrotto pocket tripod balanced on the ledge of the bridge, and hoped for the best! I recommend getting a Carryspeed wrist strap if you plan on doing the same, that way you'll have a bit of a safety net.Inspiration
I love long exposures and sunsets, I love cityscapes and architecture, and this is all of those! A perfect way to remember my first trip to London.Editing
I did Lightroom editing on this photo, and decided to go a little bit more extreme with it. I wanted the city to look like the cooling embers of camp fire. This was achieved by stripping back much of the colour, and using hot and cold split toning to replace it.In my camera bag
Back then it would have been my a6500, Samyang 14mm f2.8, Samyang 85mm f1.4, Sony 50mm f1.8, and maybe a Sony 18-105 f4 G. Nowadays I do much more bird photography, so I have a Sony 55-210 that spends some time in my camera bag, but I mostly use an Opteka 500mm f6.3 e-mount adapted telescope lens. Photos are just a bit more satisfying when you're not relying on AF.Feedback
Find a vantage point that you're happy with (preferably pointing west), wait for sunset, and let the city do its magic! Try to stick to the 'Suggestion' of thirds as best you can, and your probably going to get yourself an eye-catching photo. But, you should try tons of stuff while you're set up! After getting some long exposures, try some HDR, try some panoramas... try to mix them all together! There's really no rules! Have fun, Happy shooting!
