American bitterns are slowly disappearing because of shrinking marshlands and wetlands in California. They are a small, solitary and shy heron just slightly bigger than the night-crowned heron. If alarmed, they will often point their bill upwards, mimicking the marsh grass surrounding them. This one was photographed in the nearly dry wetlands of the Sierra Valley near Portola, California.
