I love how his expression seems contradictory to the lighting and overall dreamy feel of the photo. Almost like a beautiful nightmare. Your photos always make me think and reconsider the photo. Nice work!

I took this photo at Butterfly Lake in Ontario cottage country this past summer in August which is one of my favourite months to shoot in.Time
It was around sunset that I took this photo, which you can tell from how low the light is and the beautiful golden quality of light.Lighting
I had noticed the night before an amazing play of light through the trees near the lake, so I waited until the right time to get the light I was looking for. I also brought my subject close to the lake. Water will give off a wonderful reflective quality from several feet away. I had him face the lake to get the beautiful light on the front of his face, and also the gorgeous light coming from the trees behind him. Shooting with a wide open aperture created the beautiful bokeh surrounding him.Equipment
This was a very simple set up. I shot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark IV and my Canon 24-70 mm VII lens simply because thats what I had when my son was in the mood for a photograph.Inspiration
This whole region has incredible meaning to me on a personal level. My grandmother owned a cottage on this lake, and every summer, for all the summers of my childhood, I was at her cottage swimming at the lake. I hadn't been back in over twenty years, but this past summer was my parent's 50th wedding anniversary and as a gift to them, I rented a cottage at this same lake, close to where my grandmother had her cottage and came out east with my family for a visit, including my three young sons. I wanted to capture what summers felt like to me as a child, especially the golden light through the pine trees and the warmth of the lake in the summer evenings. That combined with the wonder of childhood and my youngest son's summer kissed hair.Editing
Very little with this image as most of it was captured in camera. I increased the blacks and contrast, added a little bit of grain and increased the warmth in the light coming through the trees. In my camera bag
I always carry my Mark IV and a variety of lenses. I am not someone who has a "go-to" or favourite lens. I like variety in my shots and like to have a few different lenses on me for that.Feedback
Shoot what has personal meaning to you - those pictures are always more interesting because you can feel the story behind them. Watch for the light and always observe. The light at night was the first thing I noticed when we arrived. I knew from experience that the water would provide the light on his face too. Look for opportunity as they are all around you every day and aren't always the big moments. This is, a very simple and quiet moment, that didn't take long to compose. I wasn't looking for the traditional facing the camera, smiling children shot. I was looking for a deeper, more reflective expression, so I simply asked him to look at the lake and take a deep breath to really feel the water. The result is before you.
