Location
I work as a lightkeeper on Lennard Island, about a mile off the coast, near Tofino, BC, and this photo was taken on a late summer morning, looking in to little Frank Island where the fog was sitting on the water and over Chesterman Beach. Because it's often so photogenic, particularly early in the morning, I have taken this photo dozens of times but this one had a golden hue and the mountains of Vancouver Island fading away in the distance - an effect somewhat reminiscent of Toni Onley's famous paintings of the BC coast - that elevated it above the rest.Time
It was early, I suspect around 7:30 am since that's when I have to go over to the radio room on that side of the station to make my weather report. I often take my camera with me to take advantage of any photo opportunities presented by the morning light.Lighting
The fog contributed the 'special effect' lighting here. Without it, the scene is beautiful and more detailed but lacking the golden hues contrasting with the black forest and faded black mountains. Perhaps it's the veil or draping effect, where the object of a photo can be more intriguing when you can't see it all, when there is some mystery.Equipment
Nikon D50, my original digital camera, with a 70-300 zoom fully extended to 300 mm. There was enough light to shoot without support.Inspiration
As I've mentioned, this is a shot I've taken dozens of times and wished I'd had my camera to take again dozens more times. Some days I know it will be waiting for me and I make a point of bringing my camera along.Editing
I would have removed some of the glare and increased the contrast a little. In my camera bag
I have upgraded from the D50 to the Nikon D600 and I love it. The 70-300 zoom is one of my favourites just because I'm on an island and some of my subjects are some distance away, but, when I'm shooting subjects on the island itself I equally enamoured with my 24mm wide angle lens.Feedback
The early bird catches the worm! As most photographers know, early and late, when the sunlight is at an angle, are the most rewarding times to shoot.
