Beguinage church (Paterskerk)
BegijnhofPaterskerkDe first Beguinage Church in Belgium was built in Liege in 1240. As the second oldest beguinage, Tienen is often mentioned, where in 1245 the construction of the Early Gothic Beguinage Church was started. The flat facade did not contain a clock tower. The plan consisted of three naves and a non-protruding pseudo-transept from the 13th century. The choir and side chapels date from the 14th century. Only the pointed arch vaults of the nave have been preserved against the façade. They clearly show that all arches rested on simple square columns. The church had a paneled wooden barrel vault.
In 1843, the Commission of Civil Godhouses (a forerunner of the current OCMW) sold the Beguinage Church and the adjoining buildings to the Dominican Fathers, who turned the whole into a monastery. That the friars were very popular, we notice that the Beguinage Church at the Tienenaars is still known as the 'Paters Church'.
On 22 September 1976 the church was largely destroyed by a violent fire. After restoration, the ruin was set up in 1997 as a walking park with a historical and touristic character.
