This small fire was started by a lightning strike. But since that area needed to have heavy ground fuels burned off, they let it burn while monitoring it. As can be seen in the sky, the area has had rain and more was threatening. As can be seen from the smoke, all of the burning was on the ground, not up in the tree canopies.
In fact, it never did burn out of control.
Valles Caldera National Preserve, Jemez Mountains, New Mexico.
