Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken at the upper Colliery Dam, Nanaimo BC. My daughter had been determined to be my model for this shot. When we got there she stuck her toe in the water and screeched. "It's cold!!" I looked at her and growled " you wanted to do this, so get your butt in there NOW!!" Did you know that dunking your child in chilly water brings such a feeling of joy sometimes?

Time

Taken midday, with the sun directly overhead.

Lighting

Natural light is my favorite. This area is treed all around so the light above the water makes for a powerful image.

Equipment

Nikon d7000, 18-55 mm lens, hand held, no flash or reflectors

Inspiration

I am an artist in many mediums, and inspiration came from the renaissance painters (Lefebvre, Botticelli and Vermeer) and the pre-Raphaelite painting of Ophelia by John Everett Millais

Editing

To get a look of depth to the water and a painterly feel, I used a gradient layer in Photoshop at about 50% opacity and then erased the layer over my subjects.

In my camera bag

My bag always contains my Nikon d7000, 18-55mm, 55-300mm, 35mm, 105mm, external flash and a wireless remote. I rarely use anything else.

Feedback

Top priority is a model that is willing to be submerged in the cold water without losing her relaxed face. Beyond that, it needs to call to you. Look from all angles and be aware of your backgrounds. You need to be satisfied with the image be for you play with altering it.
