Location
This image was taken at my studio in London. It is the result of a collaboration with an exceptionally talented hairstylist and beautician.Time
It was taken in the evening between 5 pm - 8 pm. For this shoot, we spent roughly an hour coming up with the style and makeup. Initially, I was set on doing a coloured shoot, however as the evening progressed, I felt it would be more appropriate to shoot in black and white.Lighting
For this image, I used a 2 light setup. On position just off camera-left with a parabolic umbrella modifier and a hair light directly opposite behind the talent with a snoot modifier. My key light was raised high to bring more definition and shadow to the face. As it was a black and white shoot, the shadow areas were equally as important as the highlights.Equipment
My main camera for this shoot was a Canon 5D Mark IV on Manfrotto tripod and gearhead. I also used 2 Godox AD600s and tethered to an iMac.Inspiration
The Hair and Make-up artist had a major influence for this shoot. We were both operating under total creative freedom but the theme for this shoot was simple and clean.Editing
Yes. This particular image did not need much post-processing. The make-up was immaculate so during post, I only had to do slight blemish removal. I also dodged and burn to improve the silkiness/gloss of the makeup. The hair edges were also modified slightly to give it a flawless look. However, the Hair and Make-up artist did 90 per cent of the job and I only need to enhance it a bit.In my camera bag
I find these days that I work mostly with the Canon 100mm F/2.8 macro. I love the compression, and the field of view it produces. I also now shoot almost exclusively with the Canon 5D Mark IV. I often shoot with a tripod and I favour the Manfrotto 410 geared head. I love the precision and I spend a lot of time thinking about composition.Feedback
Give creativity a chance. It's always a great idea to plan in advance your photoshoot. However, I find these days being laid back and allowing myself to experiment yields far superior results.
