Black Phoebes are found around most of California and rarely away from water. Their main activity is to suddenly leave wherever they have perched, fly out to catch an insect on the wing and then return to the perch. This one was photographed an instant before it devoured a bug while flying low over the lake at the local county park near San Jose, California. The nearby mosquitoes were next!
