Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the south west part of Samos island in Greece. The cave is near Marathokampos village and specifically at Limnionas beach.

Time

It was quite dark when I took the photo. I remember that I swam with my flashlight just to put myself at that point. After I finished with the foreground I moved outside the cave and took some pics of the Milky Way from almost the same point. I wanted to give a picture of what you really see from inside the cave.

Lighting

Lightning was poor inside the cave and that is the reason I used a flashlight into the water. I wanted to give a little boost of light into my frame and because I didn't have another source of light with me I decided to use only the flashlight I would take with me in the water.

Equipment

My Nikon D610 with the Tokina 16-28 at 16mm f2.8 and of course a tripod. Also used a flashlight.

Inspiration

I was shooting all the afternoon from inside the cave but just before dawn I thought that would be nice if I took a photo at night with myself into the sea and the Milky Way in the sky which by the way is visible from that point!!

Editing

This is a composition of two pictures, one for the sky and one for the foreground so yes I did some post-processing. I increased the shadows and the dark areas and gave a cold color to the whole picture as it seemed quite better to my eyes. For the sky I gave the same cold tone I gave to the foreground. In the end I just merged the two images to Photoshop.

In my camera bag

I try to have with me everything when I go out for photography. This is a little bit difficult but most of the times I actually do that. I have two cameras now, a Fujifilm Xt-1 and an Xt-3 and a range of 14mm to 400mm fuji lenses. This is heavy if you put together a tripod and small things that I need with me, cell phone, water, some snacks etc..

Feedback

Caves are dangerous places and the best is to have some company with us. In case we are alone we must always have informed someone we know that we will be in that place in case of emergency. We don't need much equipment rather than our camera, lenses, tripod and of course a flashlight!!
