This photo was taken on Rivière du Diable, in Québec in 2017.Time
This image was taken at the crack of dawn on a cold October day just before we got out on the water, wearing our warmest sweaters over out pyjamas. My fiancé had cupcakes and candles hidden under the seat. I brought in my 32nd birthday gently floating through the mist, blowing out candles just as the sunshine started to warm the air.Lighting
Mist, fog and golden light is my favourite to shoot. I tend to lean toward the dramatic, so I always expose for the highlights, in this case looking to the mouth of the river where the sun was starting to rise.Equipment
This was shot with my little travel camera, a fuji xt10 and 35ml lens. Until about 5 years ago I still used an old soviet film camera. Once it fell apart I looked for something that really maintained the traditional feel of the analogue. I still shoot with all manual settings with the exception of the focus (but even that I still switch to manual now and again).Inspiration
I'd woken up just as the mist was rising off the water the day prior, and knew that I had to get up to shoot before the sun rose... that if I didn't I would come home regretting it. I mention this because I'm absolutely not a morning person.Editing
I generally use Lightroom for post. Until Covid-19 I was a full time photo-editor and so have developed few base LR presets to work with. I believe this was the first version of 'Simples', a slight tone curve just to bring the blacks up a touch and a slight shift in some of the hues to bring out the beautiful light that was there that day.In my camera bag
For camping style travel when I have limited space, I usually just take my fuji xt10 and a 35 lens, however my main kit is a Sony a9, with3 lenses, a FE1.4/85, FE1.4/35 and a FE2.8/16-35.Feedback
I'm kind of an old school 'slow shooter'. I came into photography with film and working in the dark room... For me, framing your shot, and knowing your light is vital before you press the shutter button. Being able to capture highlights can make or break a shot especially when shooting on water. I personally love shooting in the mist and fog and will often go out in otherwise miserable weather, because of the way the light expands and softens. If you're a night owl like myself, facing the early rise is always worth it, even if you need to wait an hour or more to get it just right.
