Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my home town of Burrum Heads in Queensland, Australia, a sleepy little fishing village tucked away in a little corner of the beautiful Fraser Coast, and is known for it's excellent fishing and wildlife. The photo was taken where the Burrum River flows out to meet the mighty Pacific Ocean.

Time

This photo was taken at 6.40 am in July (our winter) 2018. I often get up early to watch the sunrise but this morning when I got to the Esplanade, it was really foggy so I didn't fancy my chances of getting any decent photos. However, as the light changed with the rising sun, the fog cleared a little and I was met with this view; a classic case of right time, right place!

Lighting

It was still dark when I arrived at my destination and it was extremely foggy but at one spot on the river there is a lamp which I knew would improve the lighting for me - if the fog would clear. After a while it did, (patience is a virtue!), giving me just enough light to see through the fog so I started snapping away.

Equipment

This photo was shot on an old Canon 400D, ISO 400, 1/500 sec, f/14, 39 mm, 18-55mm lens, no tripod, no flash.

Inspiration

The sunrise - it always inspires me because you never know what you're going to get! Good weather or bad, there is always a chance of capturing something decent.

Editing

The only post-processing I did was to add some warmth which brought out the lighting on the beach.

In my camera bag

My Canon 90D, 50mm prime, 18-55mm, 18-135mm and 75-300mm lenses, spare battery and tripod.

Feedback

Have patience! Honestly, the thick fog that morning made me want to pack up and go home, as I couldn't see anything out on the water. It was only the fact that someone stopped to chat to me and as we chatted, I could see the fog starting to lift. I don't like being interrupted when I'm out with my camera but this time I was, as I would have missed this shot.
