This electron micrograph shows two mitochondria one of which looks more like an Easter egg, all decorated and ready to be picked up by the next kid coming around. Though mitochondria have been traditionally considered as the powerhouses of the cells, churning out precious ATP molecules, recent evidence suggests that they play key roles in cell signaling through reactive oxygen species and calcium channels, regulation of membrane potential, regulation of cellular metabolism, carcinogenesis, cancer progression, and programmed cell death.
