I took this photo freelancing for southern indie pop band "Lake Street Dive" in Richmond, Virginia. The concert took place in The National, the most popular concert venue in the city for nearly 100 years now.Time
The concert began at 7pm sharp but between an opening act and taking some time to switch sets in between acts this must've been about 9:30 PM.Lighting
Being in the pit of the venue there is a strict "no flash" policy, especially for dslr's with detachable external flashes. All the manuel lighting was out of my control as i was merely pointing and shooting.Equipment
I was using my favorite concert set up, Nikon D500 with a 16-80 f/2.8 lens, perfect for flexible wide angle and portrait style shooting.Inspiration
Although i was technically working i have a huge heart for concert photography, i've been in the this line of work for about two years now and i love every second of it. You get to meet some of the most interesting people on the planet while being exposed to brand new genres of music. The perks are endless with this side job that I'm so lucky to have.Editing
A slight saturation boost but other than that, this is an untouched capture! In my camera bag
For concerts i always carry my Nikon D500 and a 16-80 f/2.8 lens. Additionally i will have an external flash with a diffuser for fan interactions as well as a tokina 14mm f/2.8 lens for super wide angle venue shots.Feedback
Make connections! Do some Marketing! It took me over 6 months to get my first paid gig, but once that happen and i built a reputation for myself i didn't even need to send out work offers to managers anymore, they would come to me. It's not something you can just jump into but with enough effort the pay off is extraordinary.
