Location
I took this photo on one of Maui's gorgeous summer days in Lahaina town on the northwest of the island. It is a place where passers- by stop and view the ocean scene and often take pictures as well. The shell I placed on top of one of the pillars there and it worked beautifullyTime
This was taken early evening around 530-630pm when the colors start to pop in the sunsets of Maui. I waited for the sunset so I could get it in the background of this shot.Lighting
I wanted to showcase the shell, the colors and the detail of it. Like most days on Maui natural light is all you really need. It was a clear day and made for a great colorful pastel sunset in the background over the west. The light, the angle was just right. I did not need to be concerned about the shadows on the face of the shell because it was sitting at the right angle to allow enough light to shine on the face of it.Equipment
This was taken with a Sony A 7RII, no flash, as only natural light was needed. Handheld and PatienceInspiration
What is not inspiring about Maui landscapes, beach scenes, and seascapes? That day I wanted to try something different, taking into account a suggestion I was given to try so I went to Lahaina, and took shots of everything but most of all used this shell if a few different scenes to see the results.I like the pattern, detail ,texture and color of this shell. I think for me it is about being creative and using My vision to do it. I know in todays world many great shots can be created in the software but I aspire to capture the shot naturally & emphasis it's beautyEditing
I did very little post processing only enhancing what is already there pulling out the detail & color. I use Photoshop, Corel Lightroom& Topaz Labs Plug insIn my camera bag
I primarily use the Sony A 7RII with a SEL 18-200mm F 3.5-6.3 lens. I also carry a backup , the Canon Rebel 5 but rarely use it anymore. Although the Canon is not my favorite, one never knows when I will need those lenses or the camera. It is always wise to carry MORE. In my backpack extras of everything including car chargers, plenty of batteries and memory cards as I shoot in RAW format.I carry also the tripod and monopod with me and an umbrella, flashlight, and Macro tubes.Always learning and so my equipment grows with it. I don't forget the business cards and ipad. I try to be prepared for any shot that could come along.Feedback
I am a landscape photographer primarily so I need Patience and lots of it at times! Almost always as many photographers know, being in the right place, right time, right light and always having the camera in hand is essential. With the I love of taking surf shots , beach scenes, nature and have taken hundreds, as there is no one surf spot, shore break or water crashing against the rocks that will ever be the same, it is easy to be creative! Practice, know your camera, and more practice to get to know your camera!! Take risks, shoot outside your comfort zone and get creative, get low, get high, shoot in the dark, shade and sun, shoot everything and then go with what feels right for YOU.
