He looks as helpless as most of us feel. The people in power seem to not care. Anyway, this photograph is remarkable, you can feel the hopelessness in this image that you have captured. Remarkable image.

This photo makes me sad. Shows their current state. The world will be darker without these bears.

Fantastic symbolic shot. But, unfortunately politicians don't give a grain of salt about the problem. My country has 100% green energy.. but where I work now in europe, they say it can't be achieved why not???

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo off the Atlantic coast of Greenland. I spent 17 days touring Svalbard, Greenland and Iceland aboard the National Geographic research ship " Explorer".

Time

Mid morning

Lighting

With overcast skies and the far northern azimuth, lighting was not much more than twilight even during the brightest part of the day.

Equipment

Canon EOS 1DX Mark II, camera, Canon EF-100-400mm lens.

Inspiration

As a regular polar travel, I pay attention to the changing conditions of ice both in the Northern region as well as Antarctica. I've noticed over that past few years, that ice melt has increased and Polar bears are attempting to swim further to find ice. One Polar bear carrying a cub on her back was swimming in ice free water 20 miles from the nearest shore. I have thought of her many times and hope she and her little one made it to safety. This particular photo suggests the plight of the Polar bear with little or no ice to hunt.

Editing

Lightroom, basic adjustments

In my camera bag

I carry two cameras, Canon EOS 1D x Mark II and a Canon EOS 6D, two to three lens, one for landscape and the 100-400mm or 800mm for wildlife. Also within my bag are rain sleeves, 3 to four extra batteries for each camera, lens cloths, Camera screw drivers, electrical tape, Hand warmers for the batteries, rubber bands to keep the hand warmers in place on the batteries, Lee lens filters. Zip lock bag that fits both the camera and attached lens.

Feedback

As usual in most polar regions lighting can be rather dark and extremely cold. Pay attention to your light meter and open your aperture as much as possible. Keep your batteries warm by placing them inside a pocket close to you body, or rubber band a hand warmer around the battery. If the outside temperature is below zero Fahrenheit, Do not detach your lens from your camera and place both camera and attached lens into a Zip lock bag and seal before entering a warm root. Leave the camera in the bag until the camera and lens warms up to room temperature in order to prevent moisture inside the camera.
