Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Northwest Territories in Canadas far North. We have an Aurora station that takes in about a 100 guest for aurora viewing.

Time

We start Aurora viewing around 9;30 at night and the guest leave by 3am in the morning. This night the temperature was around -30c to -35c. When it's cold like that the air is crystal clear and the stars are so bright. When the Aurora starts coming out you can see different colours and it can be so bright that the darkness's goes away.

Lighting

I had to wait for the Aurora to start moving and when it did this is what I took. Most of the night was like this but this Aurora came out over the Teepees with the moon behind them and lasted for maybe five minutes. The lighting is changing all the time with the intensity of the Aurora and if the moon is out you have it and the light reflecting off the snow to deal with. Just check each shot for your exposure and your time settings and change it as needed.

Equipment

I have a Canon EOS 6D and used a Sigma 24-70mm wide angle zoom lens with a standard Tripod.

Inspiration

I had been waiting for the Aurora to move over the Teepees and to have the moon in the shot also. I was thinking at that time what it would have been like living in a Teepee thousands of years ago at -30c and watching the Aurora dancing in the sky with the full moon and all the stars shinning down. It was a special moment and that's what photography is about.

Editing

No.

In my camera bag

I have a Canon EOS 6D with a Sigma 24-70mm lens a tripod plus a Canon 50mm and a old Canon75-300 zoom lens with a cable release and a haynes captor receiver

Feedback

Make sure you dressed warm and have a spare battery and a good tripod. If you take your camera inside after a night shooting, let your camera warm up and don't wipe your lens off. The moisture will go away in time. Then make sure you charge BOTH batteries.
