Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in the Faroe Islands during a 4 day stay in the Archipelago, it shows the crossing between Norðdepil on the Island of Borðoy on the right and Hvannasund on the Island of Viðoy on the left. I was standing on Vidoy which is the most Northerly island connected by road in the Faroes.

Time

We drove around the Islands most of the day; long winding roads and typical Scandinavan speed limits ensure you really take your time getting around, this was taken mid-afternoon - around 3 PM I think, we were there in February and it was starting to get dark so that would make sense.

Lighting

The Lighting makes this picture what it is, otherwise it would be a miserable weathered Faroese fjord scene, the Sunlight bursting through the clouds gives a massive contrast to the otherwise dull and shadowy feel of the shot, I like to imagine that the light is a higher power looking down over the two villages providing light and life to both communities.

Equipment

I always shoot with my trusty nikon D3300 and this was taken with my go-to Nikon 18-105mm lens.

Inspiration

On a day where sunshine was at an absolute premium, as we approached the villages it was just there in front of us - that was all the inspiration I needed to grab this shot.

Editing

Like everybody, yes I do post-process my pictures - this one wasn't difficult though, I made the shadows slightly shadow-ier so that the sunlight really pops, otherwise it is as it was taken.

In my camera bag

As I said before, my camera of choice is my D3300 and my lens of choice is my 18-105mm Nikon lens, also in the bag is a Nikon B700 bridge camera with a ridiculous optical zoom and an old Lomo camera which was my mother-in-law's back in the 70's. Lenses in the pack are the 18-55mm Kit lens that came with my camera and an 80-300mm Tamron lens for anything slightly further away. You will also find a Gopro, some filters and my wifes Instant camera which is great fun.

Feedback

Keep an eye out and your camera ready - this was taken totally out of the blue as we rounded the bend in the road and you could sit there for 4 weeks and not see the same thing again, having your camera set up before you head out with settings at least close to where you are going to need them is key.
