Location
This was taken in central Taipei, the capital city of Taiwan. I was wandering the streets among the bustling nightlife, attempting to find an angle that would properly capture a classic street in Taipei.Time
The shot was taken at nighttime, as this is when the city really comes alive: billboards, advertising, street glow and of course cars.Lighting
Because of the illuminated nature of the street from different sources, no external lighting was required. The only lighting under my control was the choice of shot location.Equipment
I used my Nikon D3200 with an f3.5-5.6 18-55mm lens, dialed right back to 18mm to get the angle right. Also I wanted to capture the vibrancy of the city nightlife through light trails and proper illumination of other light sources, so I used a medium weight tripod for flexibility with easy mobility through the river of people yet also stable enough to handle mild vibrations.Inspiration
I was inspired by the wide arrange of transport and movement throughout the densely populated city of Taipei, which I wanted to capture in my shot. This is why this composition includes traditional transport, modern transport and organic transport, being represented in the bike, light trails and blurred movement of people. This allowed a counterpoint between organic and mechanised transport in a city that integrates these into a growing world.Editing
I did use post processing, specifically editing in Adobe Lightroom. This included darkening whites to take away some of the burnt-out lights and make them more defined. I also darkened blacks and increased contrast to give the overall shot more defenition. Then along with a slight increase in vibrance, I applied a soft vignette. In my camera bag
I normally have my nikon D3200, my two NIKKOR lenses, the f3,5-5.6 18-55mm and the 55-300mm f4.5-5.6. Then I have a Nikon wireless controller and adapter for wireless shutter control, as well as a shutter release cable. Of course as I enjoy travel photography I need to be prepared, so I also have a spare battery.Feedback
Sure! In every scene you want to capture, try to develop a vision of what you want the photo to look like. (you probably already have it) In this case I knew I wanted to capture a wide view of nightlife, getting an angle on the street but an object in the foreground to give it artistic flair. Basically use your camera as the tool to capture what your mind pictures. So for this I knew I needed a longer shutter speed for good lighting and light trails, and a view at 18mm for perspective. Yet also look for interesting views of every situation, which is why I moved my tripod down for a low view. Just use your vision and do your best to capture it. Good luck!
