Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in La Brenne. The Brenne is an 1,672 km² large Parc naturel régional located in the Indre département of France. The Brenne Regional Nature Park has an exceptional natural heritage.

Time

The best time of the day to photograph butterflies is first thing in the morning (this one was at 5:30am). There are a couple of very good reasons for this—one, there is less likely to be wind, and wind or even a slight breeze can be enough to move the flowers your subjects are sitting on and create a motion blurred shot.

Lighting

Another reason why the morning golden hour is best is the obvious one—the light is soft and there aren’t going to be any hard shadows or detail-killing highlights.

Equipment

Canon EOS-1D X Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM 100mm/ƒ/3.5/1/200s/ISO 800 Sirui Tripod and ballhead

Inspiration

I still remember chasing butterflies when I was a kid. But making a photo of butterflies is easier in the morning when they are still wet.

Editing

Basic adjustments in Lightroom (contrast, lightning, presence, sharpening)

In my camera bag

My Canon 1Dx is my main working tool and I keep my old Canon 7D in my bag as backup or for long distance shots in combination with a Sigma 150-600mm C. My other lenses are a Canon macro lens 100mm and for landscapes and portraits a Canon 24-70mm F2.8.

Feedback

My interest and passion for photography has only grown since I purchased my first digital reflex camera (about 8 years ago). I keep challenging myself by following workshops and pushing the limits. I try to capture what I see and feel in a natural way. There is nothing more fulfilling to me than coming home with a set of raw images after an inspiring day and to develop them to a beautiful collection of images.
