Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the beautiful location of Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland. It's such a lovely place to visit with stunning views. The view of glaciers in the distance, green lush forests around. I definitely want to go back someday, Switzerland has such an inspiring landscape.

Time

I remember it well, it was the afternoon on June the 27th. We were out for the day to enjoy our vacation in Switzerland and Lauterbrunnen was on our list to visit. It was probably in the afternoon, after lunch time when we arrived in Lauterbrunnen. We heard it was a beautiful place to visit and the information folder wasn't wrong! I spend the rest of the day there with my partner, my mother in law and my aunt. We split in to two and me and my partner went on the hunt for some beautiful scenery to photograph. But to be honest, everywhere you looked, the scenery was picture worthy.

Lighting

I saw this glacier in the distance and the clouds surrounding the mountain. The perfect opportunity to snap a dramatic landscape. I wanted it to feel gloomy, like a storm was approaching. And I think I captured that quite well.

Equipment

I used my trusty Canon 6D, with a 17-40mmL f4 lens and I think my Rollei Ci6 titanium tripod, but I'm not sure, it's been a while since this picture was taken.

Inspiration

The mountain and the clouds. Like I said before, the weather was perfect and I just love the mountains and clouds like this! I had perfect circumstances to create a real eye catcher. Dramatic pictures of other photographers always inspire me and I had been looking to create such a thing myself. This was just the perfect opportunity. I had the time to set op my tripod, take in my surroundings and set up my camera,

Editing

Post processing was a must for this one. Even if it was just to enhance the drama a bit more, I enhanced contrast in lightroom, fiddled around with the highlights, shadows and blacks until I had what I was looking for and dove deeper into the post processing with a little bit of Color Efex in photoshop to add a bit more drama. I also lightened the center so the glacier would pop out a bit more and really catch the eye. The clouds play a very big roll in dramatizing this picture and so does the glacier. The picture almost seems black and white, but I assure you there is still some color in there.

In my camera bag

I always carry a 50mm lens, a wide angle lens and a macro lens, because you never know what you're going to stumble across. I take my tripod with my only when I know I'm either going to use it for a long exposure or need it because of lower light levels. Other then that I take with me a bottle of water and a little snack, because you never know when you get a little hungry.

Feedback

Always try to bring multiple lenses, because you never know what kind of things you'll come across to photograph. When you're taking pictures, take your time and imagine in your head what kind of picture you want to capture. Don't be disappointed when you don't succeed in getting that perfect picture, because it's not always in your hands. Work with what you have and learn from the experience. And when you're out shooting landscapes or architecture, look at the subject from different angles. The object you want to photograph can look so different when shot or looked at from another angle. But most importantly, just have fun and be proud of what you have created.
